Ninety days into running my company remotely from the United States, I find myself reflecting on this incredible journey. From an outsider’s perspective, one might consider me fortunate, given the smooth takeoff and the absence of a steep learning curve.
But, was it simply luck? Perfect timing? Or the result of meticulous due diligence? As I reflect on my experience, I want to share the key factors that have contributed to my success and provide insights for others looking to set up and manage a business from a distance.
Building the Dream Team
One of the fundamental elements of setting up a remote business is assembling the right team.
I firmly believe that this was a critical factor behind our smooth takeoff.
Four months before our official launch, I devoted time to carefully selecting each team member.
The secret lay in ensuring that each team member possessed a unique skill set and a personality that resonated with the vision and processes I wanted to develop for WeOse Salone Ltd.
But our team’s role didn’t stop at mere execution. They actively participated in the creative process of shaping our company’s structure, processes, and policies. This early involvement ensured that we were all aligned with our goals and objectives, which set a solid foundation for our remote operations.
Navigating the Legal Landscape
Operating a business from the USA in Sierra Leone presented unique legal and administrative challenges.
To successfully navigate this landscape, it’s essential to understand and engage with the relevant institutions.
In Sierra Leone, key bodies include the Corporate Affairs Commission, the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General, the National Revenue Authority, and the City Council.
These institutions play crucial roles in business registration and compliance, and building strong relationships with them is vital.
Furthermore, Sierra Leone boasts a diverse banking sector, including regional banks like UBA, GTCo, and ECOBank, as well as national banks like Sierra Leone Commercial Bank and Rokel Commercial Bank.
Ensuring seamless financial operations is fundamental to the success of any remote business venture.
The Dual Registration Advantage
Operating remotely from the USA introduces the need for dual registration.
I recommend registering your business in both locations. Registering in the USA provides legal recognition and simplifies financial transactions, with a myriad of financial services available online to facilitate transfers and transactions.
Leveraging Remote Work Technology
The beauty of the digital age is that it has revolutionized the way we do business.
Remote work is easier and more efficient than ever before, thanks to technology. My advice is to leverage this technology to its full potential. Tools like Google Meet and WhatsApp are ideal for communication, while Google Docs facilitates collaborative document creation and sharing.
Embracing these technologies empowers your remote team and ensures effective communication.
Leading by Example
Building a successful remote business isn’t solely about passion, although it’s undoubtedly crucial.
It’s also about commitment, principles, and discipline. Lead by example by demonstrating your commitment to the venture, upholding your principles, and maintaining a disciplined work ethic.
These qualities set the tone for the entire team, inspiring them to follow suit.
Lastly, I firmly believe in the power of possibilities, as echoed by the words of Nelson Mandela, “It seems impossible until it is done.”
The journey of setting up and managing a business from the USA to Sierra Leone may have its challenges, but with a dedicated team, the right approach, and a commitment to success, the possibilities are boundless.
The Road Ahead
As I reflect on these first 90 days, I’m grateful for the smooth start of WeOse Salone.
While it may not be solely due to luck, timing, or due diligence, it’s a combination of these factors along with dedicated teamwork, legal compliance, and embracing technology. With these elements in place, I believe that the road ahead holds even greater promise.
